Golfers keep friend's memory alive with FUN-raising event PDF  | Print |
Lindsay, May 18, 2010

For the past 8 years, the golfers participating in the John Lindsay Memorial Golf Tournament have been remembering a good friend ... and helping patients at the Ross Memorial Hospital. Each year, the golfers have donated the proceeds of their FUN-raising tournament to the RMH Foundation, to be used to purchase medical equipment or fund capital projects. john_lindsay_memorial_2010.jpg

This year, tournament co-coordinators Greg Welton and Les Fowler presented a cheque for $1,650 to Erin Coons, Executive Director of the Foundation.

John Lindsay was well known in the community for decades as the owner of Lindsay Pontiac Buick - and the coordinator of a golf tournament in Niagara Falls that involved a number of local business people. The first tournament in 1975 involved only four people, but it has steadily grown to include dozens of people who not only have fun - but who raise funds for the Ross Memorial Hospital and The Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto.

Greg Welton and Les Fowler are long-time employees of Lindsay Pontiac Buick, who worked with John Lindsay until his death in 2003. They've taken over the organization of the golf tournament, and the tradition of giving.

"The golfers have really found a special way to honour their friend's memory," said Coons. "They know that supporting the hospital was important to John Lindsay, and they're continuing that legacy. It's a touching tribute. We're honoured at the Foundation to be the recipients of their generous gesture."
