“I have been an insulin dependent diabetic for 57 years. My control of it has not always been the best, so on the advice of my doctor, I phoned your Diabetes Education program and made an appointment. Without going into too much detail, I want to tell you that the staff’s expertise has brought me to a new level of understanding of my diabetes. They took me step-by-step and I now feel I have control of, and understand more about, my diabetes. ‘The Girls’ – as my husband and I refer to them – have explained to me and shown me how to incorporate more foods into my meal plan and adjust my insulin accordingly, resulting in more accurate and stable readings. I know I speak for several of my friends who also have diabetes and have been referred to ‘the girls’. We are all very thankful that this program is available to us – actually just a telephone call away if we need them. You should be very proud of your diabetes education team!”
"When my mother had a series of strokes at age 92 we were concerned that this might mean physical deterioration that would end a happy life, full of activity and friendships. When we brought her to Ross Memorial Hospital, she was quickly received, assessed, medicated and cared-for by a group of dedicated professionals and released within two months. Today, she is determined to walk again and get back to her garden. My contact with the Ross brought home to me the true meaning of a 'community hospital'."
"On two occasions, my two month old son, Owen, showed signs of distress and I brought him to Ross Memorial's emergency department. Immediately, the emergency team took hold of the situation, assessed him and determined that he needed to be transferred to Sick Kids in Toronto. Each time, the staff at Ross Memorial was professional, efficient and effective. Even the medical team in Toronto commented on the fact that the Ross emergency team had done everything they were supposed to do. They even looked after me, keeping me informed of what was happening to Owen, his condition and the transfer procedures. As a mother of three young children, it is comforting to know that in the event of an emergency, my family and I will be well-cared for by the doctors and nurses at Ross Memorial Hospital."
"My mother-in-law, Ivy, was 91 years old when she was admitted to Ross Memorial Hospital for palliative care. Our family spent many hours and days with her during her stay at the Hospital and we always felt comfortable, like we were at home. There were flexible hours, youngsters could visit, music was allowed in the rooms. The hospital staff in the palliative care unit has a gift - their kindness and their empathy was so welcoming. They not only took excellent care of Ivy, they provided my husband, family and me with much-needed support. I am so glad that there will be a new unit dedicated to palliative care patients and their families. A place where family can stay overnight, a place for privacy, to have a coffee without having to walk to the cafeteria, this makes a huge difference for the patients, families and the wonderful staff at Ross Memorial Hospital."
