Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation is located on the 1st floor between Diagnostic Imaging department and the Laboratory. The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Ross Memorial was introduced in 1991 for those who have had a heart attack, heart surgery, symptoms of heart disease, or those who are at high risk of developing heart disease. The program provides education, exercise, monitoring and support for participants and their families. Participants get together every Monday and Wednesday for a 12-week period. The program is funded by Ross Memorial, however, a $75 nominal fee is charged to cover the cost of handout materials. Graduates of the 12-week program are invited to attend the ongoing exercise program, the "Retreads", which offers supervised exercise classes. It allows participants to continue exercising three times weekly for a small fee. Education Education sessions are led by a multi-disciplinary health care team, which includes a physical therapist, a nurse, a dietician, a pharmacist, a chaplain, a rehabilitation assistant, and a mental health therapist. Topics covered include anatomy of the heart, risk factors for heart disease, safe exercise, healthy diets, medications, stress management, psychological factors, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), tai chi, smoking cessation, spousal support and energy conservation. Exercise Exercise sessions usually last for an hour and include warm-up exercises, aerobic activities, strengthening and stretching exercises, a cool-down and relaxation. Exercise programs are individualized, based on a graded exercise test, and will guide participants towards continuing their exercises at home. Monitoring Monitoring involves the measurement of weight, body fat, waist measurement, heart rhythm, knowledge of heart disease, functional ability and depression screening. Support Support is provided throughout the program for participants and their families. We encourage patients to attend our ongoing exercise program the "Retreads" or to exercise in the community. Registration To participate in the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, you must be referred by a physician. Ask your physician to forward their referral to the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at the Ross Memorial Hospital at 705-328-6094. The cost of the program is fully covered by Ross Memorial Hospital. However, each participant is required to pay $75 for the cost of materials. Fees can be waived for those on disability or welfare.
