Ross Celebrates RPN To RN Graduates PDF  | Print |
Lindsay, July 29, 2004

Ross Memorial Hospital is delighted to recognize the employees who have recently graduated from the RPN to RN Bridging Program, offered in partnership with George Brown College.

This program, which began on September 23rd, 2002, provided an opportunity for Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) to acquire the qualifications of Registered Nurse (RN). It was made available to RPNs within the City of Kawartha Lakes and surrounding areas. Students had a variety of experience, ranging from new RPN graduates to those who have been working as an RPN for up to 25 years.

The RPN to RN Bridging Program was developed and implemented by the Clinical and Staff Education Department at Ross Memorial.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Registered Practical Nurses within the community,” says Sheryl Wallis, Education Co-ordinator, Ross Memorial Hospital. “We have full support from the Hospital administration and George Brown has been excellent to work with; and we thank the Queen Street United Church for helping us out with the space.”

Many of the graduates were balancing careers and family life while completing their studies. Lorie Wires, a graduate of the program, feels that the support of hospital staff and administration, along with the camaraderie that developed among the students, helped her achieve success.

“The hospital was so supportive, and they have been great in trying to accommodate our schedules,” said Wires. “Everyone was asking how we were making out, and it really encouraged us.”

Wires received the Dean’s Medal 2004 - in Diploma Nursing from George Brown College. Wires is currently a RPN on the Ross’ Surgical Pediatrics Floor, and was given this prestigious award at the recent graduation ceremonies.

This award is given to the graduate who has achieved a high academic standing and who best exemplifies the qualities required in the profession, and is chosen from all of the graduates in the Nursing program at George Brown.

“At first, I thought the letter was a scam, I couldn’t believe it,” added Wires. “I’m proud to have received the award, but it really is shared by all of us. We all worked hard.”

President and CEO, Anthony Vines was inspired by the graduates. “We really commend them for all that they have been able to achieve. This diploma is truly the product of personal sacrifice and a deep commitment to the medical profession, and we are very proud of the entire class.”
