General Information

This medical student bursary of $9,000 is provided to qualifying candidates with the hope that the candidate will choose to practice medicine in the City of Kawartha Lakes and become a member of the medical staff at Ross Memorial Hospital. There is however, no absolute requirement necessary that such a commitment be made by a candidate. The successful candidate(s) will receive this bursary for one academic year only.

The Hospital will maintain contact with the bursary recipient(s) and will seek to provide the recipient(s) with clinical elective opportunities as available/appropriate.

Bursaries will carry the name of Ross Memorial Hospital.

The availability of this bursary will be communicated to Canadian Universities and Professional Associations, and to potential qualifying candidates. The Hospital’s website will provide information about the bursary.

Bursaries will be provided from the generous donation provided by Ray & Jessie Harris.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements in order to be considered for a bursary:

  • Resident of the City of Kawartha Lakes for at least two years of the five previous to undergraduate study.
  • Enrolled in undergraduate studies in a Canadian School of Medicine during the 2006 school year. 
  • Canadian citizen or landed immigrant.
  • Able to demonstrate a financial need.

Procedure

Applicants must provide evidence of:

  • Residency in the City of Kawartha Lakes for at least two of the five years prior to post-secondary study.
  • Enrollment in a qualifying Canadian faculty of medicine.
  • Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status.
  • Financial need. All applicants must provide a letter (2 pages maximum) explaining current total debt load and any factors (personal, financial, or other) that reflect their financial need/status during 2006. See attached Financial Resources form.

Deadline for Application

Applications will be received up to May 11, 2007 (Retroactive applications for previous academic years will not be considered).

Notification

All applicants will receive notice as soon as possible after recipient(s) have been selected.

Payment will be made to the qualifying candidate(s) by May 31, 2007.

Appeals

All decisions made by the Awards Committee are final and irrevocable; appeals will not be considered. The Ray & Jessie Harris Bursary Awards Committee will have the full and complete authority to award the bursary(ies) based on the applications of qualifying candidates and within the availability of resources provided by the donor.
