Dragon Flies' donation purchases MRI Breast Imaging Software

When it comes to upper-body exercise, motivation and moral support, dragon boating is a perfect fit for women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Likewise, the Dragon Flies’ annual contribution to the Ross Memorial through the proceeds of their Dragon Boat Festival is a perfect fit with the purchase of specialized breast imaging software that works with the community’s new MRI.

Today, members of the Dragon Flies Breast Cancer Survivor group presented a cheque for $31,250 to Erin Coons, Executive Director of the Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation. The funds are being directed toward the purchase of the Aegis 4D visualization software and workstation, plus the AETEC biopsy console. This acquisition is a key component of the hospital’s application to become an accredited Breast Assessment Centre, affiliated with Cancer Care Ontario.

The dedicated MRI breast software enables radiologists to view images in 4D – the fourth dimension being time – providing the ability to characterize and diagnose suspicious areas with real time image processing. The biopsy console provides streamlined biopsy guidance by registering grids to an MR image, and increasing access to target areas in the breast.

“By helping the hospital with this important equipment purchase, the Dragon Flies are – once again – helping local patients to detect and treat breast cancer earlier, giving them a better chance for a positive outcome,” said Coons. “Every woman in the City of Kawartha Lakes owes the Dragon Flies their gratitude. They’re truly looking out for all of us.”
