Our Resolution ... Your Care: Help RMH Fight Colon Cancer

Colonoscopies are an uncomfortable topic. Nobody wants to discuss them, let alone go for one. But it’s a conversation that’s becoming increasingly important in a community with a high percentage of people over 50.

It’s a conversation that Sandra Jordan wouldn’t have taken part in – until a colonoscopy recommended by her doctor located a mass that required immediate removal. She was lucky; it wasn’t cancerous, but her story could easily have had a different outcome had the mass gone unnoticed for a few more years.

Early detection is vitally important, as General Surgeon, Dr. Alex Matz explains. “The good news is that colon or bowel cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer. If it’s caught early, over 90% of cases should result in a full recovery. Unfortunately, a lot of people wait too long to be screened for colon cancer. That’s why colon cancer is the second deadliest cancer in Canada, for both men and women.”

Dr. Matz has partnered with the RMH Foundation, to distribute the Spring Appeal letters to every household in the City of Kawartha Lakes, and explain the need to acquire a new gastro/endoscope, plus a high definition monitor that will show high resolution images during laparoscopic procedures.

“These tools will make it possible for us to find our patients’ problems while they can still be fixed,” said Dr. Matz. “Our resolution is your care.”
