Ross Foundation Aiming to Purchase Important Diagnostic Equipment

August 3, 2004 - Lindsay, Ontario

The Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation today announced that their recent equipment fundraising campaign has reached almost 85% of its goal. The campaign would see the Ross Memorial Hospital acquire a new Flexible Video Colonoscope and a new Flexible Video Gastroscope for their Endoscopy Suite.

These scopes can save lives by catching potentially serious problems early. In fact, a colonoscope can help prevent cancer altogether by identifying and removing polyps before they become cancerous.

On hand for the announcement was Foundation Board Chair Linden Mackey and Pauline Hunter, a local resident involved with the campaign. Pauline Hunter knows just how important this diagnostic equipment can be. Routine tests and a colonoscopy recently detected that she had a tumour.

“I’m one of the lucky ones,” says Hunter. “After Dr. Baeta performed surgery to remove the tumour, I didn’t need further treatment. Thanks to this wonderful technology the cancer was discovered before it had time to spread.”

“Because of my experience, both of my daughters were sent for a colonoscopy as a preventative measure, and it’s a good thing they were. One daughter had one polyp removed, and the other had two,” added Hunter. “I am so grateful this procedure exists so my girls will never have to go through what I went through.”

When the Ross’ new Ambulatory Procedure Area opens later this year, the Ross will have the space to hopefully perform a higher number of endoscopy procedures. This makes the purchase of a new colonoscope and gastroscope even more important.

“As of today, we have raised $63,480 or 84.6% of our $75,000 goal,” said Mackey. “We are pleased with the generous response we have received for this campaign, and we hope it continues in the next few weeks so that we are ready to equip the new centre when it opens.”
