Introducing the new RMH Board of Governors

Ross Memorial Hospital held its Annual General Meeting on June 21st. During this meeting, the election of the hospital’s Board of Governors took place.

The Board of Governors is responsible for the overall governance of the hospital and is comprised of volunteers from the community. Its members set the hospital’s strategic priorities and ensure they’re met; they assess the quality of the care provided, and ensure financial resources are managed appropriately. In addition to monthly board meetings, members serve on various committees of the Board.

The 2012/13 Board consists of the following individuals:

Laurie Davis, Chair, began serving the Board in 2006 when she became a community representative on the Governance Committee. Laurie is the Manager of New Ventures, Communications and Marketing of the Closing the Gap Healthcare Group. Previously, she was a founding and Board member, and later Chair of Women’s Resources, Lindsay’s women’s shelter.

Karissa Ward, Vice Chair, is a lawyer and partner with Wards PC in Lindsay, practising primarily business and estates law. She joined the Board in 2006 and was formerly a member of the Kawartha Lakes Community Health Care Initiative Board of Directors. Karissa is a member of a number of professional associations, including the Kawartha Lakes Estate Planning Council, Victoria Haliburton Law Association, and the Canadian Bar Association. Most importantly, she is the mother of three busy children.

Sara Beukeboom has joined the Board after participating on the Resources committee as a community representative since 2008. She brings experience to the Board as the City of Kawartha Lakes’ Corporate Services Manager of Financial Services. She is a current member of the Board of Trustees at St. Andrew’s Church and the Certified General Accountants Association of Durham Region. She also volunteered her time on the Parent Council of Alexandra Public School.

Bill Charlton also began serving the Board as a member of the Resource’s committee. Bill is the Managing Director of WFC Financial Services and is a member of several charitable and service organizations, including the Community Care Foundation of Kawartha Lakes, the Rotary Club of Lindsay, the Ontario Institute of Agrologists, and the Lindsay Curling Club.

Herb Gamble, Treasurer, joined the Board in 2005. Herb is a partner with Collins Barrow Chartered Accountants and has practised in Lindsay for over 30 years. He was previously President of the Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Tourism Advisory Board.

Wayne Brumwell has been a member of the Board since 2007. Wayne is retired from a career in Finance & Administration with the Mitchell Partnership Inc. In the past, he has volunteered on the Board of Directors for Markham Stouffville Hospital and the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital Foundation. Wayne also sits on the Board of Directors of a consulting engineering company in Boston, Mass.

Val Harris is a local financial consultant who joined the Board in 2009 after participating as a community representative. She sits on the Board of the Kawartha Community Health Care Initiative and is the Past President of the Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce; she has also spent several years on the Boards of Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes and Village Housing.

Arthur Hornibrook joined the Board in 2008. His career in the manufacturing industry involved heading companies in Canada, the US, and abroad. He is currently on the Board of Roxul Inc., a manufacturer of insulation products, and is the owner/operator of a management consulting business. Arthur’s community involvement has included the Kawartha Cycling Club, Lindsay Kids of Steel, the Fenelon Falls Health Team and the Fenelon Chamber of Commerce.

Ivan Reynolds joined the Board in 2010. A partner in the law firm Gemmill, Farn & Reynolds, he has extensive volunteer experience in a variety of volunteer organizations, including the Alzheimer’s Society, the Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce, the Estate Planning Council, the United Way, church committees and sports teams. He also served ten years volunteering on the RMH Foundation’s Board of Directors.

Nancy Rooney is one of the newest members of the Board of Governors, joining the Board after a participating on the hospital’s Quality committee as a community representative. She is an administrator at Extendicare Kawartha Lakes & Lakeland Village and has extensive experience in the Long Term Care sector, as a member of the Four Counties Palliative Care Steering Committee, the Ontario Long Term Care Association and the Health Integrated Networking Team. Nancy has also volunteered her services as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary.  

In addition to the ten elected members listed above, the Board also includes a number of individuals who are appointed by virtue of their roles, including RMH Auxiliary Vice-president Bryan Olson, City of Kawartha Lakes councillor Andy Luff, RMH President & CEO, Brian Payne and VP of Patient Care, Carol Smith Romeril. 

The Board has representation from our dedicated medical staff:  Dr. Maria Cescon, Chief of Staff, and Dr. Michael Francis, President of Medical Staff.   

This talented and dedicated group will help to ensure that the Hospital is positioned to meet the health care needs of the communities within the hospital's catchment area. We thank them for their commitment to quality health care.
